When it was built by James Twiggs, an Irish Innkeeper, and his wife, Lucy Stillwell-Twiggs, a boarding house for railroad workers. The house fell into disrepair in the 1980s, when it endured two fires that charred the facade and damaged the internal structure while vacant.

You and your guests are enveloped in a charming and relaxing environment. One of our favorite bungalow plan books is Little Bungalows published in 1922 by E. Because it's just a plan book and not kit homes, many of the plans are unique. And because Stillwell was located in Los Angeles, it has the cachet of the California bungalow.

Candace’s Aunt, Wilma Levine, is the incomparable General Manager. Stillwell was notable not only for his architectural practice, but for his success in publishing and distributing small plan books. Quick to spot the bungalow trend, Stillwell published one of his first books in called Beautiful Bungalows. He advertised widely in many of the national publications of the day including House Beautiful. (A typical ad from a 1914 House Beautiful is shown above.) According to the US Census, Stillwell was a practicing architect until at least 1930.

The house features a romantic white banister staircase leading up to the second level make for a fantastic photo opportunity. The Twiggs House is an elegant indoor option for your ceremony, cocktail hour, and/or plated dinner. Upon arrival, you and your guests will be greeted by double mesquite wood gates, suggesting an event is secluded and intimate.
Viewing a decorative niche, the columned dining room flows into a vaulted great room, which hosts tall radius windows and a fireplace framed by bookshelves. The angled kitchen's serving bar accesses the grand breakfast nook and vaulted keeping room. Secluded for privacy, the master suite revels in a bayed sitting area, vaulted spa bath and his and hers walk-in closets. Upstairs, three bedrooms (one with a private bath) share a loft and computer station.

A local couple purchased the building in 1988 with the hopes of turning it into a sheet music store and performance space. While the facade was salvageable, the interior was not, leading to renovations that were completed in 1990, when the house opened for bookings. In 2000, the house was purchased by the Flores family of the famed El Charro Café after their search for a unique site for a family wedding. Now owned and operated by Candace Flores Carrillo, a certified Wedding Planner who brings more than 25 years of Catering and Event Design expertise. Stillwell House is truly a family-owned and operated event site. Candace’s mother, Chef Carlotta Flores, is at the helm of the acclaimed in-house catering company - Stillwell Catering Co.

Their event planners can help you coordinate the details while their talented chef can design a sumptuous menu with your tastes in mind. The staff can also take care of setup and cleanup, letting you and your loved ones focus on celebrating. During your reception, if the venue cools down too much during a brisk evening, they have space heaters for your comfort. When bringing in your cake you can trust it is in good hands as they carefully carve it for your guests and display it on a specially laid out table. Formerly the Carriage House for the stables of the residence, the 1901 Bar Room features the historic Antique Bar circa 1900 from the famed Old Pueblo Club. The 1901 Bar Room’s intimate atmosphere is perfect for cocktail hour and/or dancing space. It boasts an entertainment stage, restrooms, dance floor, gift and card box cutch, coffee bar and cake or dessert display backdrop areas. The plans are emailed, thus eliminating shipping costs and allowing the customer to receive the plans more quickly. E. W. Stillwell was a prolific designer of those quintessentially California bungalows. Advertisments for his plans appeared in magazines up and down the West Coast including Sunset.
The esteemed Chef Carlotta Flores leads the kitchen at the Stillwell House & Garden. She fuses flavors from around the world to create her delicious dishes. Customizable menus are an option, and it is possible to inquire about specialized meal selections just for your youngest loved ones.
